Parents and Students: We are still operating under our Seemless Summer program. Anyone who is 18 years old or younger, enrolled or not, can receive at no cost a breakfast and/or lunch. Households can pick up to five days at a time including weekends. Meals can be picked up at the Willits High School cafeteria Monday through Friday from 8am to 2 PM. Deliveries are available upon request on a daily or weekly basis. During winter break, meals can be picked up Monday and Tuesday, December 21st and 22nd and Monday and Tuesday the 28th and 29th from 8 to 2 PM. You can call the cafeteria to set up delivery or with any questions you may have at 707-459-7700 ex 1555.

Just a reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday, December 15th, is not a minimum day. The minimum day this week is this Friday, December 18th. Students have not been consistently joining their PE, and Exploratory classes. It is important that they attend all the classroom meeting times online. Also, if your student’s schedule changed to include ELD and Math Intervention, these are not optional classes. These are part of the program of support for students, and are a requirement for students. By law the school has to provide this support to students. Complete school attendance, in all classes is very important to the learning of each and every student. Please attend classes all week, and then enjoy your two week break. Hello BGMS Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers, BGMS is excited to have Honors Awards Assemblies, recognizing students for their achievement in the first trimester of this year. The sixth grade assembly will take place Tuesday, December 15th beginning at 11:20 am, the seventh grade assembly is on Wednesday, the 16th beginning at 9:40 am, and the eighth grade assembly is on Thursday, the 17th beginning at 8:00 am. The assemblies are virtual and the links will be in your student’s Google Classrooms. You are all encouraged to attend. Hello BGMS Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers, All students in Art classes this trimester have Art supplies that have been donated by the Rotary Club of Willits. We are excited to have these available for students. Students or parents can pick them up from 7:00 am to 8:00 am and from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Sixth graders on Monday, seventh graders on Tuesday, and eighth graders on Wednesday. Bags have been prepared and will be in front of the school for pick up. Please remember to wear a mask and socially distance. I want to remind everyone that Mondays after school Ms. Wall is available to help virtually with Language Arts work needing to be turned in, and Wednesdays Ms. Golding is available for Math help. Students have links for the after school academic assistance in their classrooms, but if you cannot find the link, call the office and Pam will give it to you. If your student received a no credit grade (NC) in any core course they should be attending this after school assistance class for 9 sessions so that they can make up that grade. BGMS Trimester 1 Parent Newsletter 12/2/2020 Your Family’s Information is Important Mr. Westerburg, the Superintendent of Willits Unified School District is asking parents to fill out a survey so that we have a better understanding of what is needed when we return to in person instruction possibly as soon as the start of January. Please help us out with the planning by giving us your family’s thoughts. Only 26% of our BGMS families have taken the survey, and it is indicating that half of the families will not return to in person instruction, but want to remain with online learning. We need to hear from the other 74% of families. We want to be well prepared for when we return to in person instruction. Two pieces of legislation, SB 98 and SB 820 make important changes to how we take attendance this year. These have requirements for distance learning, the type of learning we are in now. First it requires that for instruction there be daily interaction between teachers and students, and between students and students. To make sure we included that interaction BGMS set up live online teaching through Zoom or Google Meets for class meetings. If a student joins a class meeting, with their camera on they are given attendance credit for that class. If they have their camera off due to internet problems they are given attendance credit when they respond to the teachers questions. A class also has to have assignments, called classwork. If a student is unable to get into the class meeting, they are not given attendance credit until they complete the classwork for that class, that day. This is only for attendance. The quality of the work, including deadlines for completing the work, and participation in the class meeting determines the grade that is given for the class. This year teachers have to account for who was in the class meeting (synchronous work), and who was not in the class meeting but completed the work (asynchronous work), in their attendance. You should also know that students are expected to do the asynchronous work immediately after the class meeting, before their next class. Most teachers are available during that time if students have questions about what they are doing. Students do not have any homework, after school, unless they do not complete the asynchronous assignments. Assignment Weights in Classes This year as parents are much more involved in the school work of their students we are getting more questions about how assignments add up for grades. I want to explain the different weights that certain assignments have on the overall percentage of the grades. As an example, assignments that are classwork are weighted more heavily on the grade, than participation. Classwork has more of an impact on the overall grade, than participation does in ELA and Math. These weights are decided by departments. English Language Arts weights Participation 10% Classwork 60% Assessment 15% AR 15% Math Weights 6th grade: Classwork 55% Growth Checks (tests/quizzes) 20% Warm-ups 15% Participation 10% 7th grade: Classwork 55% Growth Checks (test quizzes) 20% Warm-up 15% Participation 10% 8th grade Classwork 40% Quizzes and Test 25% Warm-up 15% Final Assessment 10% Participation 10% Teachers will be better able to tell a parent which assignments fall into which categories. Please email the teacher to have further explanations of these. As you probably already know these are the overall grade percentages: A is from 90 to 100 B is from 80 to 89.99 CR is from 60 to 79.99 NC is from 0 to 59.99 The best way to get an answer to your questions is to email the teacher. Going Out of Town In past years when a family went out of town during instructional days, they would sign a modified independent study contract and teachers would give the student the work to complete while they were away. This year the procedure is different. First, if they are going to a place that has internet, and if they are available during the same class scheduled times, students can simply join their classes, and do the work. The assignments given do not have to be different than what is given to the rest of the students in the class. If they are not available, or if they do not have internet access, they will be expected to do the asynchronous work assigned to the class during their time away. If they don't have internet access they will be given time to complete their asynchronous assignments. Chromebook Not Working? If any student has a Chromebook that is broken, or that they are having problems with, we encourage them, or their parents, to come and exchange it for a new Chromebook. Call us or just come from 1 to 3:30 every day. Are you using Aeries Parent Portal? BGMS recently looked to see how many of our parents, guardians, and caregivers use the Aeries Parent Portal to monitor their student’s grades, attendance, missing assignments, and general information. We found that two thirds of these adults are using this resource, which can be easily accessed through the Parent Resources button on the BGMS website http://willitsunifiedca.apptegy.us/o/baechtel. I am urging the one third of parents, guardians, and caregivers who have not yet started using the Aeries portal to call Pam at 459-2417 and she will walk you through the process of launching your parent portal account to have all this information at your fingertips. Our goal is 100% of parents using the Aeries Parent Portal to stay informed. Promotion Policy Whereas it was difficult for us to keep to the Promotion Policy in the 2019-2020 school year, I want to be clear that the Promotion Policy is in effect this school year. The requirements are the same as the last two years, but let me explain the policy in terms of the current grading system we are using. Students must pass Math and Language Arts classes with a CR (credit) or better, two out of the three trimesters to move to the next grade level. Either Social Studies or Science classes must also be passed with a CR or better in two out of the three trimesters. Students may also gain promotion by passing their SBAC tests (there will be state testing in May 2021) in Math and English with a 3 (Meets Standards) or 4 (Exceeds Standards) level score. Students who do not pass classes or the SBAC will be given the opportunity to make up the deficit in summer school. Students who do not perform successfully in Language Arts or Math in summer school will be retained in the previous grade for the core classes they are behind in or all classes if they are unsuccessful in Social Studies or Science classes, as well. Students will be evaluated at the end of the first trimester and if they are working at the “CR” Level in the retained class(es) they will be promoted to the next grade level. Students not performing will remain in the lower grade for the remainder of the school year. The building principal will be responsible for promotion and retention of these students. Students who receive special education services will be moved to grade levels based on the IEP team’s decisions. All students with a grade mark of NC (no credit) in Language Arts or Mathematics, on their report card, are required to attend the After School Academic Assistance classes once a week for each subject beginning immediately. Students in grades 8 who need to attend summer school, that are not on course to be promoted will not participate in the promotion ceremony at grade 8. After the first trimester Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will be determined to be at risk of retention, and will generate parent notification (letters will be sent next week), if they have earned an NC in any of their Core Courses, including Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science. After the second Trimester eighth grade parents will have a promotion meeting scheduled with the student and the grade level core teachers, if they have two NC’s in any subject. The purpose of this meeting is to develop a Plan for Promotion. Students in grades 6, and 7 will be notified. Students must make up all grade marks of NC in any one core subject. Each grade mark of NC will be made up with 9 sessions of participation, and attendance, in the After School Academic Assistance Program, through the Kids Club after school program (more information about this will be sent home). What about returning to in person instruction? I want the adults in students’ lives to know that at BGMS we are working to make the transition to in-person instruction as smooth as possible. That being said, there is so much to consider, and some things affect the plans being made, when they change. There was a preview sent from the district office about what the student day might be if we were to start in person instruction while we were in the red tier. That plan is now changed because right after that was put out we received guidelines from our local Health Department for in-person instruction. We are continuing to update our plans, and it seems that now we will be able to keep students with their current teachers, and we have more protocols on how to keep students safe while attending to their social emotional well being. We are no longer allowed to return to in-person instruction as a whole school because we have moved back to the purple tier, but we will keep you informed about our plans when in-person instruction is a possibility again. Hello BGMS Parents, Guardians, and Care Givers, We hope that everyone had an enjoyable break, and is ready to continue learning in the second trimester of this school year. I am sure that you are all aware that as a county we have slipped back into the purple, Tier 1, and that prohibits us from opening our schools to in person instruction for everyone. As we begin the second trimester we want to again offer parents any information they may need to support their students’ education. The time we have set aside is Wednesday at 5:30 pm for in person conversations, if you call us we can arrange a time that may be more convenient for you, and a virtual information session, if needed. If you have questions as you receive the Trimester 1 report cards this week, the best way to communicate with teachers is through email. This Wednesday we will have a BGMS School Site Council meeting beginning at 3:30 pm, virtually. The Zoom link will be placed on the BGMS website. Hello BGMS Parents, Guardians and Caregivers, This is the last week of the trimester. ELA and Math classes will be involved in end of the trimester testing this week. We will not have final grades until December 2nd when report cards will be mailed out to parents. Please take advantage of the Monday and Wednesday virtual after school academic assistance classes for ELA and Math if students need any help completing any work they may be missing in those classes. Students have links to these classes in their classrooms. This week we are exchanging the White Chromebooks for new Chromebooks. Please bring them with the charger to the library from 1:00pm to 3:30 pm any day this week. Call us if you need to do the exchange at another time during the day, and we can make an appointment for you. Monday, 11/23, is the start of trimester 2. Some students will be changing their exploratory and PE classes to the AVID Elective, Math Intervention, or English Language Development. Any changes in schedule will be announced in the student’s email. Make sure that your student checks their email on that day. This day is also a remote learning day, only. There will not be any Zoom classroom meetings. Students are expected to work on the assignment given by the teacher in their classroom on their own. The 24th through the 27th of November is the Thanksgiving Break. Zoom classes will resume on Monday, November 30th. WUSD has developed a draft plan with input from administration and teachers on how to reopen schools safely. I expect that this plan will have changes to it as time, data and procedures change. A major goal before coming back on site is to develop a viable academic plan, share it with our parents and then poll our parents to determine who wants to send their students back to on-site learning. Without question, WUSD will be following all the County Health Department guidelines for example; masks will be required, social distancing as much as possible, and small cohort sizes. I envision there is a group of parents who are not going to send their child back regardless of the hybrid model we have in place and others who are passionate about getting them back in even if it’s for a short period of time. WUSD wants to provide what the community needs and will have options for either on-site or to continue with distance learning. In order to provide our parents with choices it may require some staff movement and could take some time to put in place. WUSD will be doing a survey with the parents of all students to get information back to help plan for a reopen, whenever that can take place. The district has all the PPE necessary for staff and students. Every classroom will have a hospital grade air purifier and daily disinfection. Each site will have a set of health standards protocols. (Attached) At this time, COVID numbers are growing daily and reopening in a fully hybrid model is in not a good idea. The District also has several import safety items on back order, such as air purifiers. Currently WUSD is allowing students on campus to meet one on one with their teachers as needed, and providing direct services for our students with special needs. In the next few weeks, I would like the coaches to begin athletic conditioning with our students, following all the rules established by the athletic department. With the holidays approaching this is an opportune time to refine the practices and protocols. After the holidays, in mid-January we will have data to determine if it is allowable to reopen. Baechtel Grove Middle School will begin replacing broken student Chromebooks this Thursday, and Friday November 10th and 11th. Students, or Parents, Guardians, or Caregivers can bring the broken Chromebook to the BGMS library between the hours of 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm, and they will be issued a new Chromebook. Please do not come before those hours because at other times we have students on campus. If any part of the Chromebook is broken, bring it in for a replacement. Do not forget to bring in the charger as well because the new Chromebooks do not use the same charger. Also, you might want to consider purchasing insurance for the new Chromebook. This is available from the company until the end of November. We will have that information for you. Hello BGMS Parents, Thank you to our parent Site Council members who are giving us good input from a parent perspective. There are only two weeks left to Trimester 1. Remember that if you have a question about a class, you should email the teacher with your question. This Wednesday is the Veterans Day Holiday. There will not be any classes that day. Thursday BGMS will have an ELAC parent meeting in person for parents of the English Learner students. Everyone please wear masks. The meeting will be conducted in Spanish, with English translation if needed, in room 3, at 5:00 pm. If there are too many of us to socially distance we will move to the cafeteria. Finally, I want to think Willits Rotary for their donation of 4,000 dollars’ worth of Art supplies for all of our students in the Art classes. Hello BGMS Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers, This is Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences Week. We have tried to schedule a conference with every parent and one of the student’s teachers. If we have not scheduled one with you please call the office and let us know. Our goal is to give every single parent a current progress on their student’s learning in all of their classes. Together with Kids Club, BGMS is offering a Family Fun Fitness program, on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to gather on Google meets and the focus will be on improving Health-Related Physical Fitness and building community. The after school intervention classes will begin this week, virtually. There will be help for Language classes on Monday, and Math classes on Wednesday, from 3:00 to 4:00, online. The link for these will be in the students’ ELA and Math classrooms by tomorrow. Also in the event of a power outage we will not have any synchronous or asynchronous instruction, WUSD schools will be closed if power is turned off. Hello BGMS Families! This is Jody Ward, PE teacher at BGMS and long-time employee of the Willits Kids Club. Beginning this coming Thursday (10/29), we will be offering Family Fun Fitness from 3:30-4:30. We will be offering your child and you the opportunity to participate in weekly physical activities that will help improve everyone's health and fitness. We will meet every Thursday at 3:30. We will meet on Google meets and the focus will be on improving Health-Related Physical Fitness and building community. I will lead you through physical fitness activities that you can follow along with. We will also be working on creative physical fitness activities that will be completed away from the computer screen. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone this Thursday!
